How do I setup member criteria?

I have tried to update my criteria for new members to be inclusive and exclusive. How do you know if your updates have worked? Also, how do you eliminate an existing criteria? how long does it take for the edits to appear? how do you make it inclusive as in what the searcg criteria in the existing database? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This can take up to 24 hours to update, you can check be running a quick search on your site.

Does this affects who joins - or just what members are displayed?

The criteria affect both:
1. members who are filtered from the database
2. members who register on your site, if they do not match the criteria of your site they will not be shown in the search results there.
